Roots member Wes Brubacher uses this c1910 Orten & Steinbrenner steam winch to help describe the operation of steam engines. The winch has been painted different colors to indicate:

(1) the path the steam takes through the engine
(2) the method of power transfer from the steam to the cable drum
(3) the braking system
