This color-coded engine has become a teaching engine for Roots of Motive Power. The function of each part is described below.

White The steam piping system carries live steam to the engine slide valve.
Yellow Location of slide valve and rods which control the flow of steam into the piston in the red cylinder.
Red Location of the piston, which, when acted upon by the steam, produces the power for the engine.
Tan Used steam exhaust.
Green The connecting rod transmits the power developed in the cylinder to the flywheel.
Blue The flywheel, and shaft that it is mounted on, changes the power from a linear force to a circular force and drives the small gear on the lower shaft.
Black The cable drum receives its power via the small gear on the lower shaft driving the big gear on the drum shaft.
Brown The brake system, operated by the brown rod on the front of the engine, actuates a brake band which works on the cable drum shaft between the big gear and the cable drum. This brake held the cable drum during the loading and unloading operations in which this winch was used.

NOTES:

1. This winch will turn in either direction depending on the position of the yellow control handle on the front of the engine.

2. Because of the relationship of the small gear to the large gear, a force many times greater than that created by the steam acting on the piston and driving the flywheel is made possible.
